This Maori Bone Hook Whale Tail Necklace is a beautiful design from Peter Mitchell, who descends from the Ngati Toa iwi of Porirua.

Peter is a master carver, having carved for museums and exhibitions over the past 30 years. We are lucky to have a few of his pieces.

This hei matau is beautifully carved, with a notched edge and a whale tail at the end of the hook.

The fish hook design represents peace, prosperity and good health, and safe travel over water.

The whale tail is a symbol of protection, friendship and harmony.

The hook necklace is bound with a strong plaited cord with adjustable knot, so you can position it where you want on your chest.

The necklace measures approximately 4.5cm (1 3/4") long.

Peter doesn't bleach his carvings to a pure white, so you will still see the natural striations in the bone.
